A car is recommended which will also be useful for sight seeing around the island. We can organize a hire car to meet you at the airport, or if you prefer we can pick you up from the airport and take you to Funchal or the Villa. Taxis are readily available at all times. We can also arrange for you to be taken back to the airport at the end of your holiday.
The airport is situated 18 kilometres east of the capital, Funchal. Scheduled flights are provided by TAP, and many other companies from most European capitals either direct or via Lisbon and these are supplemented by a wide range of direct charter flights like Thomson, First Choice and now budget airlines Easyjet and FlyGlobespan. There are also regular shuttle air services between Lisbon and the capital, Funchal, and also between Funchal and Porto Santo. All classes of passenger aircraft, right up to Boeing 747s, are able to land and take off from both Funchal and Porto Santo airports.
TAP passengers coming from Lisbon can get on the Aerobus free of charge by showing their boarding tickets. Other passengers have to pay about 4 euros. On the return trip, the bus leaves from Avenida do Mar directly in front of the TAP office. There is also another bus from the airport organized by the company SAM. After leaving Arrivals, follow the main road and keep on the right hand side. After about 100 metres (just past the end of the terminal building), there is a bus stop. The ticket only costs a few euros and may be bought on the bus. This bus travels through Centro to it’s own terminus, but take care as buses travelling in both directions use this bus stop.
